"Walking Steady"

When Art House looks back at his bout with bone cancer and the two surgeries that followed – he’s thankful for his health, mobility and the staff at Skyline Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department.

After being diagnosed with bone cancer 10 years ago, Art underwent surgery to replace his left femur with a metal rod. His surgery however resulted in the shortening of his leg, which limited his abilities and caused him pain.

“My leg hurt when I walked and I couldn’t deal with the pain,” says House. “It was only after seeing my primary care physician, physical therapy was recommended. When asked where I would like to go, I immediately said Skyline. Partly because it was close to home, but mostly because I knew it had the best therapists in the Gorge.”

After a thorough evaluation, House began a program of physical therapy to build his strength, as well as aquatic therapy to help with the pain. “This was really an outstanding experience,” he says. “The physical therapy team went above and beyond to ensure my treatment was successful. I can’t thank them enough for their tenacity, skill and kindness. They motivated me to become stronger and get in better shape.

“Today, I continue to use the exercise regime prescribed by Skyline Physical Therapy – swimming at least two times a week. I’ve lost more than 40 lbs., and my goal is to walk without my cane,” continues House. “I know I can do it!” So do we.
